I scramble for the light.

For the pocket of sunshine
hitting the deck
at 1 o’clock,

the sun-soaked front step, or

curled up cat-like on the
window seat.

For a brief moment,
the blazing maple

Hungrily, I soak it in.

or whatever it is they do
when the leaves yellow.

The crickets are quiet,
the songbirds subdued.

Silence deepens.

The shadows lengthen.

I scramble for the light.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this, Jess. Every year October brings up such a mixture of feelings in me. I love reading how others experience this season of transition. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you, Johanna. I’m so glad you enjoyed this. I start getting anxious to soak in all of the light I can when August hits. I think I need to start learning how to embrace the growing dark too.
